Collective Responsibility in Movement Art-Making
"Self-Care is Community Care"
Watercolor & ink
The question of "Where I'm At" was given to me as a prompt by the Necia Media Collective. It was perfect timing as I shifted from holding the individual burden of answering every art request in my inbox to recognizing the necessity of collective responsibility in movement art-making & story-telling. Creating For the People Artists Collective, a Chicago-based collective of radical artists of color, was both a form of self-care and community care. Sustaining a network of artists who can take on projects that others cannot, that can offer advice, guidance and skill-sharing to each other and work on projects together is critical to not burning out as both artists and organizers!
